Great Books Academy Online Classes and Courses Offered by Some Charter Schools
Most of these charter schools can provide some or, in a few cases, all of the GBA materials to students enrolled through them without cost to the students, sometimes including the enrollment fee for the online Great Books discussion groups, at State expense. Available funding varies state to state. Typically, students enroll with the charter school and follow some basic reporting rules (and sometimes some testing at the school) and do their schooling at home (sometimes called “independent study” or even “homeschooling”). In some cases the students are carried on the charter schools student roles as regular students, but simply study at home. Call or email GBA or the charter schools nearest you for more information. Each of these charter schools (below) added the GBA curriculum at the request of interested parents or students.
Many more would do so if requested by interested parents or students. However, not all charter schools cooperate with “independent study” or homeschoolers students, so one has to inquire and find those that are willing to do so. Some charter schools are supportive of homeschooling on philosophical grounds; other cooperate reluctantly. Most are willing to consider the idea, as it usually results in more revenue for their school from the states, which pay additional administrative fees to the charter schools, based on enrollment numbers. We do not extend credit to charter schools, but most can pay with the order if asked to do so. You may suggest interested charter schools contact us at GBAmailbox@aol.com or by calling 719-930-7549. Some Canadian Provinces also reimburse for homeschooling supplies.
The Great Books Academy conducts online tutoring classes only. Reading the Great Books, which is the great bulk of the study is done entirely independently by students, individually, on their own time. We do not used visual/video except to post related materials, hence the classes are virtual. Great Books courses are conducted using the Socratic method, which is a cooperative discussion between individual students – there is no teacher-led lecture. Our online classes offer online tutoring support only. For that very reason we use the term “tutor” (or the lesser, “moderator,”), not “teacher.” We believe this fully complies with related CA regulations regarding acceptable online tutoring not requiring credentialed teachers in the Great Books courses.
